The project aims to improve urban mobility in Florence, reducing traffic and emissions, and enhancing accessibility to suburban areas. It is part of a broader program for the redevelopment and development of public transport in the city, with the goal of promoting sustainable mobility. The project was developed with the involvement of public and private entities, as well as the public, through various consultations.
The new tramway line route is 6.1 km long, connecting the Piazza Libertà area to the Rovezzano railway station. The route was designed to integrate with existing infrastructure, reducing environmental impact and utilizing already developed urban areas.
The project plans for 15 stops located along the entire route to ensure equitable access to all areas involved in the new tramway system. The stops are designed to guarantee accessibility for all, including people with disabilities, and are strategically positioned near residential areas, commercial zones, and points of interest.
The route for line 3.2.2 winds through important city arteries. It starts from Piazza Libertà and continues along Viale Don Minzoni, passing under the railway line with an underpass, then proceeding along Viale dei Mille, Viale Fanti, Via Mamiani, Via Duse, all the way to Via del Gignoro and the terminus at the Rovezzano station. The entire route is designed to optimize integration with existing traffic, reduce travel times, and improve mobility flow.
The project involves the construction of the new tramway route, which includes a railway underpass to connect Viale Don Minzoni and Via dei Mille. Another key element of the project is the expansion of the Bagno a Ripoli tram depot, which will allow for a larger number of vehicles to be housed, in line with the planned upgrade of Line 3.2. This expansion was designed to minimize disruption during construction.
